Support Polish solidarity with Cuban dissidents and political prisoners, and sign the petition.
Lech Walesa, Poland’s anti-communist Solidarity trade union icon, and economist Leszek Balcerowicz, architect of Poland’s transition from communism to a market economy, and Cuban dissident Hector Palacios Ruiz, on Monday launched an international petition for the release of more than 200 Cuban political prisoners and prisoners of conscience. During the press conference in Warsaw, Mr. Palacios Ruiz called Cuba’s last Sunday’s election a “farce”. He added,
“Everyone knows Fidel Castro is the greatest impediment to democratic change in Cuba — everyone also knows he almost no longer exists…”
Here’s the text of the Petition, in English, Spanish and Polish:
We are appealing to the Cuban government to free all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in Cuba. Their continued imprisonment violates the fundamental humans rights. During her own enslavement, Poland experienced a great deal of solidarity from the free nations of the world. It is our moral duty to support the pro-freedom aspirations in Cuba.
This appeal, with the list of signatories attached, shall be handed over to an officer of the Cuban Embassy in Warsaw, with a request for it to be submitted to President Fidel Castro.
(Spanish) Llamamos a las autoridades cubanas a que liberen a los presos de conciencia y a los presos politicos en Cuba. Su encarcelamiento es una violación de los derechos humanos fundamentales. La Polonia cautivada experimentó una gran solidaridad de parte de las sociedades libres. Nuestra obligación moral es apoyar las aspiraciones a la libertad en Cuba.
El llamamiento junto con la lista de las personas que lo han firmado será transmitido a la Embajada de la Rep blica de Cuba en Varsovia, con la petición de que sean entregados a Fidel Castro.
(Polish) Wzywamy władze kubańskie do uwolnienia więźniów sumienia i więźniów politycznych na Kubie. Więzienie ich jest łamaniem podstawowych praw człowieka. Zniewolona Polska doświadczyła wielkiej solidarności ze strony wolnych społeczeństw. Naszym moralnym obowiązkiem jest wspierać wolnościowe dążenia na Kubie. While there is a small movement of US librarians who are trying to raise support for independent libraries in Cuba, and to get the American Library Association to call for the release of all prisoners….I wonder if you would be so kind as to let us know who is funding this group?
Funds from US taxpayers have gone through Freedom House, NED, Center for a Free Cuba and other groups to fund the People in Need Foundation (prague). PINF has made public campaigns for human rights in Cuba with the very same people in Poland who are backing this new effort.
I am all for funding this stuff, just not for the secrecy and silence that often surrounds such funding programs.
So, can you do a little digging in Poland to see who actually pays for this group? The Solidarity in Cuba site has nothing about where they get their money, except to say they are supported by the Lech Walesa Foundation. And that website says nothing, that I can see, about funding either?
